GB's Wood and Gems

            A wonderfull,deep brown Smoky which

demands a very strong backlight to see any

of the true color;otherwise it looks black.

Without the Garnet covering these crystals

would probably be called 'Morion'.They hail

from China,the land of mineralogical

wonders,so rich in specimen-grade minerals

that they've barely scratched the surface.

These large specimens however,come from

a very small find that will probably never be

duplicated.This beauty is 7.5 centimeters tall

,6.5 centimeters wide and 5.5 centimeters

deep.A very substantial crystal,and quite

large for this variety.

     As can be seen in the photos,the faces

on this piece have an odd finish that I can

only describe as 'velvety'.The faces are

well-formed and the tip is sharp.The Garnet

covers five sides of the crystal,and they

are well-formed and sparkly.The bottom,

as well as the contact-area at the back,

are self-healed.

     A large piece,9 cm tall,6 cm wide and 4.5

cm deep.It has the same deep coloration

and the same velvety finish on the faces.It

has a smaller twin alongside and is wrapped

all around in beautifull orange Spessartine

Garnet.This specimen is also self-healed,

and carries a bit of matrix along on the right

side.The Garnets are well-formed,gemmy and

sparkly.On the front(main) side there is what

appears to be a key which forms as a geometric

hole in the Garnet covering.There is a larger,

less-formed one on the adjacent face to the

left as well.There are some larger Garnets on

three sides of this specimen,with several

reaching .5 centimeter!This beauty also shows

some minor castellization on one of the exposed

sides.

     The termination is complete and the

faces are sharp.

    Here we have a large double-terminated

specimen,with a single termination on one

end and multiples on the other.I find this to

be the most interesting piece of the bunch.

The Garnets are very gemmy on this one

and some reach .5 centimeter in size.

When we turn this one over there is a

surprise waiting;light-green Chlorite clings

to this area of the crystal!It is also evident

on all sides of the muti-terminated end,and

can probably be held accountable for the

obvious corrosion of the crystal,which

subsequently re-healed into a wondrous

myriad of castelled/elestial faces.There is

an attached crystal at the bottom-left of

the specimen which has been corroded in

the extreme,re-healing as well into a

multiple-faced point.It bears Chlorite on

the bottom side as well.Overall,a beautifully

contorted specimen,with hours of enjoyable

exploration in store.

     Here is a lighter specimen,almost a

greyish Smoky,with beautifull,clear gemmy

Garnets.The color of the Quartz,the quality

of the Garnets,and the castellization of

the crystal combine to form a very aesthetic,

pleasing piece.The crystal itself appears to

be a triplet,with three distinct pieces growing

together to form one larger specimen.The

clarity and quality of the Garnets is very

high,their facets sparkling in the light.The

contacted base is healed,as is a large key

on the lower-left side where a previously-

attached crystal separated from the main

body.There are two smaller crystals which

sprout from the sides of the main piece

near the termination.The larger one is a

twin and it has a much smaller crystal

coming out from it at a rakish angle.

These are all strewn freely with orange

Garnets as well.10 cm long,3.2 cm wide

and 3.2 cm deep;width measurement

does not include the attached crystals.
